Gig Economy & Neo-liberalism - A discussion
Gig economy could be bright or
dark future of world economies-a discussion
Pandemic changed the world. It exposed the economy and
development structures within minimum time. People are quarantined by imposing
curfews and lock downs. More devastating miseries have been added in empty
baskets of daily wagers. White color employees have been receiving end of
contract letters since the states declared state of emergency. Policy and
decision makers have been trying to protect citizens from fatal attacks of
COVID-19. Strong economies are plunging. Economies that were ambitious to welfare
states, abruptly collapsed due to the pandemic. All development agendas turned
to save lives and maintain food supplies. World Health Organization (WHO)
developed coordination with states to run mass level awareness campaign as quarantine
is the only protection measures available. Quarantine is challenging for states
as well as citizen tasks especially in term of income generation. States
started offering multiple economic packages and debt reprieve. But there is
urgent need to work out more inclusive and sustainable economic policies.
Despite of traditional economy, considering “gig economy” as a economy that
could reduce human resource management. For this we need to understand the gig
economy and how it works.
Do you know gig economy system?
Off course, you are aware of it.
It is system in which a labor market characterized by the prevalence of
short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs. It is
another milestone Neo-liberalism is going to achieve. No permanent jobs, no
labor unions, no perks and jobs with short contracts. Just labor. The
problematic group will be perish and could be replaced with product of
artificial intelligence-Robots. Free market will further go in hands of
capitalists. They will have more access to state affairs. We will see more
privatization in future. Lever to control labor market is already in hand.
Their all acts are legitimated as their strong presence in decision making
processes-legislative houses. It is not a story of one state, it has blanket
coverage. It is not about religion, racism, authenticity or gender, it is all
about promotion agenda of Neo-Liberalism. This is a spiteful and humiliating
agenda. It is not about humanity, culture or something invite people on common
grounds but, it is about reinforcing further divide to further rule. We saw yellow
shirts wearing protesters on the streets of Paris in 2018. It was about
economic justice. Initially the movement was motivated by rising fuel prices
and a high cost of living. It claims that disproportionate burden of government
revenue collection reforms (taxes) were falling on working class and middle
classes. We witnessed people waged protests in Hong Kong. At the beginning,
people who booked roads (protesters) only demanded the withdrawal of the
extradition bill. Following an escalation in the severity of policing tactics
against demonstrators on 12 June 2019, the protesters objective was to achieve
the following five demands (under the slogan "Five demands, not one
less"). Such agitations always alarming for the capitalist powers and
sewing demanding lips is always their priority as it is not business as usual.
We were told to not drink polluted water, it is harmful for health, we started using boiled water but they offered us bottled water at minimum price. Now they asked us to stay home if you want to be safe- we did but they do not have income generation solutions and alternatively, soon, they will announce, economic activities protect us from COVID-19.
